Harnessing The Wind

(Stories From The Cabin - Part Five)

As mentioned in the last one of these “stories from the cabin,” I liked to play with kites. I also liked to look at ways to harness the wind in general. As children we were amazed at the strength of the wind on the beach. Two of us would each hold corners of a blanket in each hand and see if we could then stand against the force of the wind. I think we even tried a “blanket sail” on a bicycle, to propel us down the gravel road in front of the beach.

Later in life I lived alone in the cabin, and I wanted a way to expend less energy than usual getting around in the old (more…)

Some Recent Inventions

Saturday, December 20th, 2008

I post many of my own invention ideas, but ideas are easy. I thought for a change I would report on some actual inventions out there. There are a lot to choose from.

Maybe you heard the story about how in 1899 the head of the U.S. Patent Office urged President McKinley to close the office because “everything that could be invented has been invented.” The late President Reagan even (more…)

More Random Ideas

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Once again, I was sitting by the window with paper and pen, thinking of random ideas, new solutions for all sorts of problems in life, and inventions or products or businesses. Here are the results.

Self Writing Book

The idea here is to start a book as though it is the main character and let it travel around the country or world, growing as others added to it. Okay, this takes a bit of explanation. The book might start something like this: (more…)

Three New Product Ideas

Friday, December 12th, 2008

Here are a few more new product ideas someone might want to develop. Yes, in case you are wondering, I do spend some time just sitting around dreaming up inventions for fun. It may have been a waste of time in the past, but now I can at least throw the ideas out there where someone might use them. Oh, and I do make a little money with my writings about these ideas as well.

Good As Gold

That would be the title of this new product, which is a (more…)

New Product Ideas

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

Here are three new product ideas that I recently came up with. I have not checked to see if they are already patented (most ideas are thought of by many people, but only one takes the trouble and expense to patent it). If not, feel free to use these ideas as your own.

What Can I Invent?

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

I was reading an article in Scientific American today, about a virus that has been adapted to collect cobalt atoms from the solution they grow in, thus creating super-thin conductive wires. Forgive me if I got the details wrong, but then that does bring me to my first point. It is that much of modern inventing and innovation is in very specialized areas, where the average person can contribute little (at least until he has spent years studying some particular area of science or technology).

A natural question to ask oneself then, is, “What can I invent?” The good news is (more…)

New Blog!

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

This is the first official post in my new (and hopefully improved) blog. It takes the place of my 999 Ideas blog that was previously hosted at Blogger.com/

What will the blog be about? New ideas. I will try to regularly have new ideas in every area of life, ranging from new inventions, innovations, political ideas, and more. They will be my own thoughts as well as those that I find all over the internet and beyond (yes, there is life beyond the internet).

I will also frequently cover techniques for having news ideas of your own, how to think differently, how to train your mind, and related subjects. You may not be aware of the many techniques for creative problem solving, or the mind training methods that can make you into powerful and open-minded thinker. Stay tuned and you’ll learn (more…)
