Idea Of The Month

The Sunk Cost Fallacy - According to the science of behavioral economics (and common sense), people are more likely to attend an event if they pay for the ticket than if they get it free, even if the information and level of interest are equal in either case. Of course, once spent, money logically has no relevance to the decision, yet the tendency persists even when people are aware of it. Most of us would feel worse throwing away a ticket we paid for than a free one.

The applications for this insight are easy to find. For example, rather than giving away tickets to "get rich" seminars, organizers would get better attendance by selling their "$100" tickets for $3. You might even "sell" a "free" ticket to an event for a couple dollars and refund the money at the door. Paying something makes people more likely to attend.
